*Black Hawk Down* (2001) – Like a damaged and shy femoral artery that retreats into your body cavity…. this movie really gets up in there and tries to leave no pain and body gore left behind. . #MissedTheRopeByThatMuch

  • “Only the dead have seen the end of war” – Plato (how did he die?)
  • Body Bag! That looks blue.. and dark… and burnt.
  • Somalia (1994) – East Africa for those who don’t know.
  • Years of warfare among rival clans causes famine on a biblical scale… sounds familiar.
  • 300, 000 Civilians die of starvation… Mohamed Farrah (no relations) Aidid, the most powerful of the warlords, rules the capital of Mogadishu (“Gesundheit”) He seizes international food shipments at the ports. Hunger is his weapon.
  • The world responds. Behind a force of 20,000 U.S.Marines, food is delivered and order is restored… (now look at these dead bodies…) April 1993 – Aidid waits until the marines withdraw, and then declares war on the remaining U.N. peacekeepers.
  • In June, Aidid’s militia ambush and slaughter 24 Pakistani soldiers, and begin targeting American personnel.
  • In late August, America’s elite soldiers, Delta Force, Army Rangers and 160th SOAR are sent to Mogadishu to remove Aidid and restore order.
  • The Mission was to take three weeks, but six weeks later Washington was growing impatient.

  • Ewan McGregor just wants to make a cup of joe and gets deployed instead.
  • Josh Hartnett: a face so serious it causes airstrikes.
  • Tom Sizemore’s helmet is held together by duct tape and grit.
  • “Don’t shoot at people unless they shoot at you.” Cool. That should go well.
  • Helicopters flying in tight formation with heroic music—what could go wrong?
  • And boom. *Black Hawk Down* is no longer just a title—it’s an entire plot arc.
  • People really be carrying wounded guys like sacks of potatoes under gunfire.
  • So much yelling. No one hears anything. Radios are mostly for dramatic tension.
  • Night falls, the rescue gets messier, and we’re still 40 minutes from exfil.
  • Guy gets shot, yells “I’m fine!” – classic war movie logic.
  • The Delta Force guys are basically video game characters with unlimited stamina.
  • The kid with the RPG is about 12 and has better aim than stormtroopers.
  • “Leave no man behind” – even if it takes the entire second act and half your cast.
  • There are like 200 soldiers in this movie and 150 of them are named “Mike.”
  • “Tell my mom I fought with honor” – the emotional damage stacks fast.
  • The whole “real event” factor makes this one hit harder than the usual popcorn war flick.
  • Sam Shepard brings that “grizzled general” energy like he was born in a flak jacket.
  • That moment when they finally reach the stadium: relief, exhaustion, mud everywhere.
  • The credits roll with actual footage/photos and *yep*, now I feel bad for making jokes.
  • Shout out to the dirt. The real MVP of this movie.

This week on FilmSack, we’ve been hit!!! and we are going BLACK HAWK DOWN!! Tell our moms and dads we fought real hard today and didn’t leave any man or body part behind. It’s where I keep my watch…. and in addition to my fondness for it… I need to know when it’s time to rendezvous at check point Netflix for some “Draft every able bodied male Hollywood actor of 2001” for some Action/Drama/War is hell?/Pew Pew… HUA? Seriously guys, HUA is going to trash-my-stash of adult entertainment when they get back to base?  DO NOT SEND THAT HOME TO MY MOM!

Anywho, I just want you guys to know… that if we every get drafted for the podcast wars and we have to fly our Black Hawk helicopter into an area where the locals hate us as much as that guy hates cans in the movie The Jerk… well I will have your 6… that’s your back Ibbott… and I have it… for as long as I can see you and you don’t notice me running away. BRIEF

In 1993, elite U.S. soldiers are sent into Mogadishu, Somalia, to capture warlord lieutenants.
